Society of Women Environmental Professionals Capital Chapter board is pleased to share the following information sent to us by a fellow SWEP Member, Dr. Claire Jantz:
The Center for Land Use and Sustainability at Shippensburg University is partnering with SoilHub to offer training in soil science for environmental professionals. Registration closes soon!
On Tuesday November 1, Navigating the Web Soil Survey will be offered. In this digital age, there is a wealth of information available at our finger tips. The NRCS Web Soil Survey (WSS) is certainly a powerful online tool, however, like any tool it takes guidance and practice to understand how to use it. http://www.soilhub.com/product/navigating-the-web-soil-survey/
On Tuesday November 15, Fundamental Soil Science will be offered. In this full-day class, students will learn the fundamental knowledge necessary to describe soil physical properties to make interpretations for stormwater BMP suitability, on-lot septic systems placement, hydric soil determinations, and other environmental site assessment needs. During the classroom portion of the course, students will learn principles of soil science through discussion and hands-on activities which provide practical applications to the lesson material. Students will also spend time in the field in a soil test pit conducting real-world observations of soil physical properties. http://www.soilhub.com/product/fundamental-soil-science/

On Wednesday, September 7th at 3:30pm, USGBC Central PA http://www.usgbc.org/usgbc-central-Pennsylvania will be hosting a panel discussion and tour of the first & only LEED version 4.0* certified project at a PA college or university! The Smeal College of Business at the University Park campus of Penn State recently earned LEED Gold certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings (EB) Operations & Maintenance rating system. This certification was the first EB project for the university, as well as their first LEED v4 project. EB projects are based on actual building performance & therefore must prove that they do indeed save energy & water. Other firsts for this project include the first & only LEED v4 certified building in the 34-county USGBC Central PA region and one of only two LEED v4 certified commercial projects in all of Pennsylvania.!
This event will feature a comprehensive panel of representatives from the university who will discuss LEED v4, as well as the intricacies of the EB rating system and Penn State’s commitment to LEED certification for all new construction and major renovation projects. Following the event, we’ll tour the LEED v4 project, as well as several LEED for New Construction projects on campus.
Carpools to the event will be arranged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Please see the link below for further info about the event & to register. Feel free to contact Heidi Kunka at USGBC Central PA ( firstname.lastname@example.org<mailto:email@example.com> or (202-706-0836 ) with any questions about the event.
* Starting on November 1st, 2016, version 4.0 is the only option for project teams registered a building for LEED certification (version 2009 may no longer be used).
